Future of High Power Lasers

Our Scalable Laser Emitter — SLEM™ — is a flat-panel laser designed to scale in two dimensions to megawatt-level output with a high-quality beam. Power-with-Quality means concentrated power delivered at a great distance, enabling practical defence and power beaming applications. Power-with-Quality also means unprecedented near-range versatility for industrial applications.

Innovative Laser Technology

Current high-power lasers feature an intermediate stage of pumping, whereby many low-quality diode lasers pump light into a fibre amplifier that converts this light into high-quality output — but limited to 10 kW or less per fibre. Even fractional megawatt output requires combining many fibre lasers.

With all their diode pumps in tow, the resultant system has thousands of optical interconnects and a lot of control electronics.

SLEM™ is composed of a flat panel of photonic crystal surface emitting lasers — diodes that emit a very narrow linewidth (high quality) — that is attached to a similarly flat evaporative heat exchanger made from synthetic diamond. The heat exchanger cools all the diodes to the same temperature so that they can resonate together and form a combined beam of high power and quality.
